Heavy drinking among college students results in over 1800 deaths each year, as well as 590,000 unintentional injuries, almost 700,000 assaults and more than 97,000 victims of sexual assaults. In a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers report on the results of the Safer California Universities study, a successful community-wide prevention strategy targeted at off-campus settings.
This is one of the first studies to focus on the total environment rather than on prevention aimed at individuals.
Reducing Off-Campus Drinking
The authors found significant reductions in the incidence and likelihood of intoxication at off-campus parties and bars/restaurants for Safer intervention universities. One brain structure particularly sensitive to alcohol's neurotoxicity during development is the hippocampus, which plays a key role in learning and memory. A study of the association between binge drinking and declarative memory – a form of long-term memory – in university students has found a link between binge drinking and poorer verbal declarative memory.

"In northern European countries, there is a strong tradition of a sporadic, drunkenness-orientated, drinking style," explained María Parada, a postdoctoral researcher at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain and first author of the study. "In contrast, countries on the Mediterranean coast, such as Spain, have traditionally been... Read Binge Drinking Affects Ability to Learn
Energy Drinks A Dangerous Mixurn:md5:455258a07ca08ca42ea85007082dffb72023-03-03T11:08:00+00:002023-03-04T09:51:05+00:00System AdminCollege Drinking
Energy drinks, favored among young people for the beverages' caffeine jolt, also play a lead role in several popular alcoholic drinks, such as Red Bull and vodka. But combining alcohol and energy drinks may create a dangerous mix, according to University of Florida research.

In a study of college-aged adults exiting bars, patrons who consumed energy drinks mixed with alcohol had a threefold increased risk of leaving a bar highly intoxicated and were four times more likely to intend to drive after drinking than bar patrons who drank alcohol only.
The study appears in the journal Addictive Behaviors.

Between 2002 and 2018, the number of adults aged 18-22 in the U.S. who abstained from alcohol increased from 20 percent to 28 percent for those in college and from about 24 percent to 30 percent for those not in school, say researchers at the University of Michigan and Texas State University. And alcohol abuse among both groups decreased by roughly half. However, the study found that the number of young adults using marijuana, as well as co-using alcohol and marijuana, has increased.

Overall, the mixed findings show more positive than negative trends for alcohol and marijuana use and misuse among this age group, but the progression still bears close monitoring, the researchers say.
The study, appearing in JAMA Pediatrics Oct. 12, examined how alcohol and marijuana abstinence, co-use and use disorders have changed in... Read Fewer Young Adults Drinking, But More Smoking Weed
Blackout Drinking Reduced by Brief Counselingurn:md5:1cca11904ed2ff544f1eb1fad89e608e2019-04-17T13:14:00+01:002019-04-17T13:14:00+01:00System AdminCollege Drinking
Short, empathetic counseling sessions – known as brief motivational interventions (BMIs) – have been effective for reducing problematic alcohol use and drinking-related problems among college students. BMIs are delivered by a trained clinician and typically involve alcohol education and personalized feedback on the individual’s drinking behavior and consequences.

Drinking too much too quickly can have many harmful consequences, including alcohol-induced blackouts – where the individual continues to function and make decisions, but later has little or no memory of the events. Blackout drinking is associated with accidents and risky behaviors, may have long-term effects on brain development and function, and... Read Blackout Drinking Reduced by Brief Counseling
Peers Key to College Drinking Interventionurn:md5:bd215dd8250f6647d20913cf52b83eae2019-03-27T17:34:00+00:002019-03-27T17:34:55+00:00System AdminCollege Drinking
Peer approval is the best indicator of the tendency for new college students to drink or smoke, even if the students don't want to admit it, according to new research from Michigan State University.

This new finding is key to help universities address the problems of underage or binge drinking, said Nancy Rhodes, professor and lead author of the study published in the journal Health Education and Behavior.

"We need to change our intervention approach to amplify the voices of those who don't approve of this kind of behavior, such as students who are disturbed at 3 a.m. by drunk dormmates arriving home," Rhodes said.
